Yanyuwa Farewell Hilda Muir in Borroloola

Farewell to "Auntie" Hilda

The Member for Lingiari, the Hon. Warren Snowdon, joined with many Territorians today in expressing his deep sorrow at the passing of Hilda "Auntie" Muir.

Her life was remembered and celebrated at a public memorial service at Marrara Stadium this afternoon in Darwin.

"Hilda was an exceptional woman, a leader of the Yanyuwa people, and a very dear friend to so many," said Mr Snowdon.

"Her life-story serves as a reminder of the painful legacy of the Stolen Generations."

Born as a "bush child" near Borroloola in 1920, Hilda Muir was taken from her mother at age 8, to be housed and raised at the old Kahlin Compound at Darwin.

"Her life was marked by a great deal of hardship, and I pay tribute to her eternal optimism and tremendous strength of character," said Mr Snowdon.

"Hilda dedicated herself to the struggle of seeking recognition for the Stolen Generations, and to reconnecting with her home community."

In 2000, she returned to Borroloola, and was accepted by her Yanyuwa people as an owner and custodian of Yanyuwa Lands.

Mrs Muir was one of the first Territorians invited to Parliament House to attend the National Apology to the Stolen Generation in February.

Unfortunately, she was unable to make the journey down to Canberra for health reasons. She witnessed the momentous occasion at the NT Parliament House.

"Her memory lives on in the heart of all Territorians," said Mr Snowdon.

"I extend my most heartfelt condolences to all Hilda's family and friends."
