Tourism Funding Endorses Vision Of Great Territorian

CLP Senator for the Northern Territory Nigel Scullion said funding approved by Federal Indigenous Affairs Minister Mal Brough this week endorses the vision of a great Territorian.

Mr Brough approved a $3.1 million from the Federal Government's Northern Territory Aboriginal Benefits Account for the Jawoyn Association to become full owner of Nitmiluk Tours and to build tourist facilities at Nitmiluk.

Senator Scullion said the funding would greatly assist the Jawoyn to realise former CEO Robert Lee's vision for the indigenous people of the Katherine region.

"Mr Lee was a great believer that the Jawoyn's drive for economic independence wasn't just vital now, it was vital for our children's children,” Senator Scullion said.

"This funding will ensure that the Jawoyn realise that dream.

Senator Scullion said it was important that indigenous people throughout the Territory learn from the Jarwoyn vision of economic independence.

"But what works in Katherine will not necessarily work at every community in the Territory,” Senator Scullion said.

"The Federal Government will continue to provide leadership and support to ensure all Territorians can share in the economic opportunities that each region offers.”
Senator Scullion also said that Mr Lee's legacy to Australia has been recorded in a stone monument at Reconciliation Place in the Parliamentary Triangle in Canberra.
