New Territory News Tangentyere Council Profits From Alcohol MiseryThe Territory Opposition agrees with the Federal Indigenous Minister, Mal Brough, that the Tangentyere Council should not be profiting from the sale of alcohol at its supermarket investment in Alice Springs.
"Alcohol abuse has been tearing the town camps apart for years and it has to be brought to an end,” says Jodeen Carney, Leader of the Opposition.
"Tangentyere Council should be leading the fight against alcohol abuse in the town camps, not profiting from it.
"People know my views on this: how can an Aboriginal organisation such as Tangentyere Council justify selling grog?
Tangentyere Council should end its hypocrisy and cease profiting from the sale of grog.
I've been raising this matter for sometime and urge the Tangentyere Council to end its conflict of interest by insisting on the closure of the liquor outlet in its supermarket.
"It should be possible to continue to operate of supermarket without profiting from the take-away alcohol that is destroying the lives of many Aboriginal people in Alice Springs.” 2007-07-11
