New Territory News Norforce Honoured Member for Lingiari and Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Northern Australia and Indigenous Affairs Warren Snowdon paid tribute to Norforce after today's presentation at the Darwin Cenotaph of Queen's and Regimental Colours to the unit by NT Administrator Ted Egan.
Mr Snowdon said it was a very proud day for the North West Mobile Force - Norforce's full title -which had earned its colours as a worthy successor to the famed Nackeroos of the wartime North Australian Observer Unit.
'It's also a very proud day for the Northern Territory,' he said.
'The colours are the first to be awarded to a reserve unit in 35 years and they have been awarded on the 25th anniversary of the unit's foundation.
'Bearing symbols of the loyalty and spirit that characterise Norforce, they represent a very old tradition as they were carried into battle to distinguish the clans and families that fought shoulder to shoulder against common enemies and these.
'The defined role of Norforce is reconnaissance and surveillance and it has built a reputation for its skill, professionalism and effectiveness.
'Norforce has gone further in the way it has actively engaged Aboriginal people.
'It has recruited and trained young Aboriginal men from remote communities – with 200 currently enlisted from 50 communities in the Territory and the Kimberley - and it makes good use of their knowledge of country in fulfilling its strategic purpose.
'This meeting of Aboriginal knowledge and modern military technology is an outstanding example of true partnership, which clearly works to the benefit of the nation.
'I am sure I join all Territorians in wishing Norforce success and high honours for its next 25 years and beyond,' Mr Snowdon said. 2006-06-26
