No Confidence In Northern Territory Politicians

The 11 Opposition and two Independent members of the Legislative Assembly have signed a letter calling on the Speaker to approve the early recall of the Northern Territory Parliament, as well as a second additional sitting day next week.

Opposition Leader Terry Mills said the letter seeks the recall of the Parliament on Monday August 10th – one day earlier than scheduled – so notice can be given of an intention to move a Want of Confidence motion in the Chief Minister and his Government.

Given that a vote on such a motion must take place three (3) clear days after notice is given, the letter also seeks that a second additional sitting day takes place on Friday, August 14th, where the motion will be debated and finalised.

This would mean that a vote on the Want of Confidence motion can be brought on and dealt with next week, instead of the following week.

“The non-Labor members of the Assembly recognise the Henderson Government is crumbling and is unable to provide certainty and stability for the Northern Territory,” Mr Mills said.

“By bringing this motion forward and finalising it next week, we’re attempting to restore certainty as soon as possible – in whatever form that is.

“The current paralysis affecting governance in the Northern Territory has to end. The non-Labor members are moving to achieve this.

“A majority of MLAs have signed the letter. If the Speaker and Chief Minister are serious about bringing certainty back to the Northern Territory as soon as possible, they have no choice but to agree to both requests.”
