New Territory News Magic Coolamon A Great SuccessMember for Lingiari and Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Northern Australia and Indigenous Affairs Warren Snowdon today welcomed the premiere tonight of the first ever Central Australian Indigenous musical.
Mr Snowdon said The Magic Coolamon, by well-known local singer and writer Warren H Williams, was a creative mix of different cultural traditions.
'It uses music and prose to tell a mysterious and magical cultural childhood fable,' he said.
'The production is a significant step for Red Dust Theatre, whose work is about supporting and encouraging Centralian playwrights and actors.
'So it's a terrific collaboration between local musicians, artists and arts organisations and Desert Park has shown its support by offering their magnificent amphitheatre as a performance space – a stunning setting in the magnificent McDonnell Ranges.
'It's the kind of event that deserves community support and there's three outdoor performances over this weekend so families can be sure of getting to a great night out.
'Warren H Williams has long been known for his singing and recording abilities and it's great to see him moving into new fields with such success while exploring and sharing his cultural stories with the rest of us.
'He's a credit to our nation and a great leader and mentor to young Aboriginal artists across the Territory, Mr Snowdon said. 2007-03-29
