Head West

September is a great time of year for Central Australians to explore the natural riches surrounding them in Alice Springs. With winter frosts over and summer heat still to come, the Western MacDonnells beckon with a range of spectacular locations suitable for day tours, hiking or overnight camping.

A visit to the Western MacDonnells with its numerous gorges, chasms and waterholes is a great way to remind yourself why Alice Springs and Central Australia are so unique and such a great place to live. It is easily possible to see most of what the ranges have to offer on a day return trip, though you could also consider an overnight at Glen Helen to lessen the pace.

Standley Chasm is located about 40km west of Alice Springs and provides brilliant scenery and excellent rock climbing opportunities. From the kiosk, picnic area and carpark, walk about 800 metres along the stony riverbed to reach the chasm. Rock climbing begins at the northern end of the chasm. Drinks, sandwiches, souvenirs and films are available from the kiosk. Alice Springs locals are not required to pay entrance fees, but let kiosk staff know you are there before proceeding.

Namatjira Drive, which departs to the right from Larapinta Dve about 47km from Alice Springs, provides access to several great West MacDonnell locations. First is the Hugh River. While crossing the Hugh River, look for a track off to the right which leads to some great camping and picnic locations along the river.

About 80km from Alice Springs is Ellery Creek Big Hole, a great place for a swim but a word of warning ... the water temperature gets colder with the depth of the water, so don't dive deeply.

Ormiston Gorge is the most spectacular of the gorges in the West MacDonnells and the adventurous can spend many hours exploring the pound which runs east from the large waterhole. The gorge is rich in flora and fauna. Facilities including barbecues and toilets can be found at the car park near the gorge. From Ormiston Gorge it is only a few kilometres down the road to Glen Helen where accommodation, meals, drinks and friendly hosts await you.
