Government Yet To Deliver Code Of Conduct

The Martin Labor Government made much in its first term of office about introducing a 'Code of Conduct' to govern the behaviour of Members of Parliament both inside and outside of the house. Since coming to Government the Chief Minister promised a Code of Conduct but it is still missing. It remains ALP Party policy.

"This again goes to the integrity of Government,” Jodeen Carney said.

"Like whistleblowers legislation, the Chief Minister has said she would introduce a Code of Conduct often but she has produced nothing.

"Or perhaps it is like Freedom of Information Legislation which is the one law that they said they would enact and have actually enacted. It has proven to be so disappointing that what should have been a triumph is now a source of embarrassment to Government.

"The Leader of Government Business, Paul Henderson, said back in March 2004 that he would introduce legislation to establish a Code of Conduct and that in the mean time there would be an education program for members of Parliament.

"The Leader of Government Business was responding to a recommendation made by the Public Accounts Committee, chaired by Len Kiely the Member for Sanderson, so far we've seen nothing.

"So where is the education program? Where is the Legislation? Where is the Code of Conduct?

"The Government has been avoiding taking this action and it is about time they committed themselves to keeping one of their promises for a change.”
