New Territory News Food Still Costs More In DarwinRecent figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveal that the Martin Government has failed to keep its promise to lower food prices in the NT. A basket that costs $306 in Sydney costs $330 in Darwin.
"When in opposition Clare Martin made enormous political mileage from food prices, saying that it was government's responsibility to deal with it,” Shadow Treasurer Terry Mills said.
"All we have seen is a food prices inquiry that changed nothing. Where are her howls of indignation now? I wonder if the Chief Minister is prepared to apologise to Territorians for misleading them.”

"Well I know many thousands of people who don't have that high level of disposable income. People who are retired, who are on pensions, who are on some level of disability pension, who are with young families. The Prices they pay for food are serious disincentives to living in the Territory. We have to turn that around. We want to build the Territory, and the cost of food must not be a disincentive for staying here.
"The cost of fuel is important. It is the great impost on business here and an additional impost on the cost of food and the basics of life, particularly in remote communities in the Territory.”

"Tackling the high cost of living in the Territory remains a priority for Labor.”
