Darwin Public Housing Announcement Not Credible

The latest Henderson Government pre-election announcement regarding the re-development of public housing in Parap just isn’t credible, says the Opposition.

“Had the Chief Minister been serious about this project he would have consulted with the people who will be directly affected by this plan,” says Terry Mills, Leader of the Opposition.

“Instead the Chief Minister rolls up unannounced, holds a short media conference and jumps back into the chauffeur driven Statesman.

“In the Chief Minister’s high handed wake a lot of people are now concerned about where they’re going to live.

“I’d like to be personally informed if someone was planning to demolish my home and the same courtesy should be extended to people in public housing.

“The Chief Minister’s actions show utter disdain for the residents of these public housing complexes.

“That’s a cruel slap in the face for the many honest, law abiding people who live in very difficult circumstances in these housing complexes.

“The time frames announced by the Chief Minister are also highly dubious.

“This time, on the eve of an election, we have a five-year plan for public housing for one small area of Darwin.

“You couldn’t call the Chief Minister - ‘Hurrying along Henderson’.

“Labor’s record of delivering promises on time and within budget is woeful.

“On the Government’s past record this will be a ten-year plan, perhaps a bit more.”
