Darwin Detention Centre A Powderkeg

Continuing riots, escapes and damage to property at the Northern (Coonawarra) Detention Centre could just be the precursor to a greater tragedy Senator Trish Crossin says.

""I am concerned if there is another outbreak of violent behaviour, there could be serious injuries to staff or detainees” Senator Crossin said.

"I am calling on the Federal Government to undertake a comprehensive investigation and review of the current security arrangements.

"In the last week we have had reports of new incidents, of rebellious detainees, understaffing and guards that are not empowered to deal with attacks.

"On top of this the facilities are still inadequate after almost five years and millions of dollars renovations in recent months.

"Detainees are able to get back and forth between compounds by going over the rooves of buildings so guards can't easily keep apart warring groups.

"There is no operational Separation Unit yet so guards can't isolate violent detainees and there is nowhere to place detainees who are flouting the rules.

"The illegal fishing crews detained in the centre basically have nothing to lose while they are awaiting their ultimate deportation to their homes.

"Coonawarra residents living right next to the detention centre are very concerned after the series of escapes.

"Up to now the detention centre has been a comedy of errors; let's ensure it doesn't become a public tragedy.

"A fully functioning detention centre is meant to be an essential link in the government's illegal fishing policy yet this is another example of an outcome that is grossly inadequate” Senator Crossin said.
